FURSDON COTTAGE, CADBURY, DEVON.

We visited the Fursdon Estate, which is located in mid Devon and stayed in the rather gorgeous Fursdon Cottage.  Ideally situated half an hour away from Exeter with both Dartmoor and Exmoor within a 40 minutes drive away, it is the perfect base for sightseeing.

On the estate you will find Fursdon House, gardens and tea room which are all open to the general public on certain days of the week.  Please see their website for more details.

Fursdon Cottage is located behind the main house and certainly has the wow factor as you approach from the road along a lovely drive and through a little courtyard.  Parking is opposite the beautiful stone cottage, so no heavy bags to lug too far.  Access is through the front door and your are immediately met with a clean, fresh and modern interior.  From the small hallway to the left is the utility room.  Lovely light airy and large room with plenty of space for coats and boots, along with the fridge freezer and cupboards galore for food and drink.  Incidentally, we ordered food and drink from Waitrose and arranged for it to be delivered on our arrival.  Unfortunately, we were delayed but the lovely lady at Fursdon House organized it for us and met the delivery driver at the cottage.  She even put the chilled and frozen food away for us. (This isn’t normally a service they offer but was a lovely gesture at the start of our holiday).

The kitchen was very well equipped and it was lovely to have an open plan room so the cook of the family wasn’t alone while cooking and drinking gin!  This room also incorporated a large dining table, comfortable chairs and a sofa and a wood burning stove. We found we spent most of our time in here.  There was a room beyond the open plan kitchen/lounge which was called ‘the snug’. We took our seven week old baby with us so the snug was perfect for our older two children, (8 and 10), to relax and play on Kindles, read books or play games out of earshot of the sleeping baby, (or sometimes screaming baby!)

Upstairs there were three good sized bedrooms.  Two rooms shared the main bathroom and the main bedroom had its own ensuite.  Also there was plenty of room in the main bedroom for the travel cot.

The grounds were delightful and there was a small play area for the children just a short walk from the cottage.  The immediate area around the back of the cottage was quite steep but walking through the garden and up to the very top provided beautiful and very scenic views across the Devon countryside.

If you’re looking for a place to stay within a village setting then you may want to look elsewhere, but if you are looking for a family base, set in a beautiful location, to explore Devon, which is of a high standard then this your place.
